Sunday Woof from South Middle School

L'shanah tovah to our Jewish Bulldogs celebrating Rosh Hashanah. Happy new year and best wishes in 5787! Monday is a Day 1 at South Middle School, and we will restart the cycle for the first time this year.

BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT: OPEN HOUSE
Thursday evening, 9/17, starting at 6:30 PM, South teachers will be in their classrooms. It is an Open House with no scheduled events, so caregivers can drop in anytime from 6:30 to 8:00 PM. This is a great opportunity for caregivers to meet the teachers, hear about curriculum and learning goals for the year, and see the classrooms. Make sure you have written down your child's teachers and room numbers so you know where to go! The easiest way to do this is to take a photo of their schedule on your phone (but you can visit the classes in any order you'd like!)
  • 8th grade parents and students are invited to start the evening early at 6:00 PM in the Cafeteria to hear about the optional, overnight field trip to Washington, DC in March. Hear about the sites we'll visit, the learning opportunities and social highlights, and payment.
  • 5th grade parents are invited to start the evening in the Media Center at 6:00 PM, where Mr. Rainie will lead a presentation about what to expect from your child's years at South Middle School. Meet some of the key players in our Student Support Team and hear what middle school has to offer your child.
The School Nurse, Heather Driscoll, will be available in the Health Office if you need to drop off medications for your child. Visitors on this night can park in the main, upper lot, or in the lower Gym lot. Please be mindful of neighbors and do not park on Kenmore Rd., Celia Rd., or other neighboring streets.

SCHOOL PICTURE DAY
Student portraits will be taken this Friday, 9/18, during school in the morning. Attached is the electronic order form from Hayward Photography. All instructions are on the form, as well as the pre-order school code (SMSF26). The pre-order option will be available until September 23rd at 7:00am and has the lowest prices for photos. All students will have their photo taken on Friday for use in our internal systems. If parents do not order by the pre-order deadline, their child will receive a NO BUY proof card with instructions on how they can order at that point, but the pricing will be higher. All photo orders benefit South Middle School PTO. If you miss school this week, there will be a make-up day later in the fall. That date will be scheduled and announced in late October.

TECHNOLOGY AT SOUTH
Braintree Schools Technology Department can provide a Chromebook on loan for the school year. A student's parent/guardian needs to fill out the loaner contract in ParentSquare in order for them to get a Chromebook. The loaner contract is available here: https://www.parentsquare.com/feeds/83221451 (scroll to the bottom to fill out the form)

You can also choose to purchase insurance for $30 ("Option A" on the form: "Device Protection Plan"). Personally, I highly recommend this small expense to prevent a future repair or replacement fee. The nature of our age group is that they will be tough on any device they're using daily and bringing back and forth between classes and between home, school, and activities!

Every year, some students choose to bring in a fancy laptop. I would strongly advise against that. Kids at this age are gaining a lot of responsibilities, but a very expensive gaming laptop is a terrible way to learn a valuable lesson about how to manage your necessities. Leave the MacBook at home and take out a loaner Chromebook while you're in school.

From 7:30-10:00 AM daily, Tech Services has a technician stationed in the South Media Center. Students are welcome to come in for tech support, or to sign out a loaner for the day if they have forgotten their device at home. Parents/guardians may also choose to come in, but it is recommended to email our tech, Nate Collier (nathaniel.collier@braintreeschools.org), first to schedule an appointment. He is busy all morning troubleshooting teachers' technology as well as students, and occasionally is transferred to projects in another school.
