In just under 2 weeks, students will be returning to South for our   final   year as a 6-8 middle school. It’s been 66 years since they broke ground at our current building, and this will be its 64th year in operation. Meanwhile, after breaking ground on our new building just 6 months ago, the steel structure is nearly complete and crews are actively putting up the exterior walls, pouring concrete floors, and installing the roof. Time flies, and we’ll soon be preparing to move next year's grades 5-8 into the brand-new, state-of-the-art school building! (Sorry, 8th graders... but you will always be remembered as our   final  graduates in the original South!) In the meantime, we cannot wait to greet our returning and new-to-South students on Wednesday, 9/7! Construction at South is humming along! There will be a few carpenters working this Saturday to remove some formwork from concrete pours at the rear of the site. No mechanical work so notification wasn't sent out in advance, but if you happen to be in the neighborhood tomorrow and see some folks inside the construction area, you'll know why! Today, we were thrilled to invite back to Braintree's veterans and town dignitaries to South's Memorial Day Assembly. This is a long-standing tradition, pausing before the long weekend to reflect on the sacrifices that were made to secure our personal freedoms. The weather cooperated, and kudos to 8th grade Social Studies teachers Jim Joyce and Kyle O'Brien for coordinating this wonderful, inspiring, student-directed event. This week, steel beams started being placed for the South construction project. The area on the left behind the crane is going to be part of the cafeteria and stage area, and the area on the right with the lower roof is going to be the Library/Media Center. The small section of beams that jut out under the roofline on the right is a roof overhang in what will become the large, central courtyard.   (1.) 7th grade Earth models adorn our hallways year-round! (2.) We're looking forward to the return of Trivia Night at South this evening! For those who have signed up, please  arrive at 6:00pm.  Trivia Night is expected to be  over at 8:15pm  (a slight adjustment from the previously-mentioned 8:45) for anyone carpooling.  Wear costumes and bring your vast knowledge! Spring Break starts tomorrow and continues all next week. We wish a happy Easter on Sunday to all our Bulldogs who are celebrating! And for any Orthodox observers--including our Ukrainian brothers & sisters--we wish a happy Easter on Sunday, 4/24, in the Eastern Orthodox calendar. On Saturday, April 30th from 12:00-1:00pm, Student Council will be hosting the second annual Beach Day Clean Up at Sunset Lake in Braintree. Sign up using this google form link -  https://forms.gle/3FTBwji2PE6mT9ti6  by Thursday April 28th. All grades are welcome, but maximum participation is 50 students. Construction update:  The construction crews started pouring concrete foundations for the new school building this week. It's remarkable how much progress they're making! Blasting slowed down at the end of this week and they anticipate blasting will be fully completed next week. This is welcome news to those of us who startle every time there's a rumble! Shoutout to the crews from Bacon Construction, who run a street sweeper through our driveway a couple of times each week and clean up the mud tracks from our site onto Peach St. We appreciate their extra care in keeping our school and neighborhood clean! Students of the Term:  At the end of each term, we ask teachers to look through their rosters and take a moment to consider which students make a special effort every day.
