Welcome to South's new school year!

In just under 2 weeks, students will be returning to South for our   final   year as a 6-8 middle school. It’s been 66 years since they broke ground at our current building, and this will be its 64th year in operation. Meanwhile, after breaking ground on our new building just 6 months ago, the steel structure is nearly complete and crews are actively putting up the exterior walls, pouring concrete floors, and installing the roof. Time flies, and we’ll soon be preparing to move next year's grades 5-8 into the brand-new, state-of-the-art school building! (Sorry, 8th graders... but you will always be remembered as our   final  graduates in the original South!) In the meantime, we cannot wait to greet our returning and new-to-South students on Wednesday, 9/7! Please read through some important information below and don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions. FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL – WEDNESDAY, 9/7 Students will receive their schedules on the first day of school. Homeroo...

Memorial Day Woof

Today, we were thrilled to invite back to Braintree's veterans and town dignitaries to South's Memorial Day Assembly. This is a long-standing tradition, pausing before the long weekend to reflect on the sacrifices that were made to secure our personal freedoms. The weather cooperated, and kudos to 8th grade Social Studies teachers Jim Joyce and Kyle O'Brien for coordinating this wonderful, inspiring, student-directed event. This week, steel beams started being placed for the South construction project. The area on the left behind the crane is going to be part of the cafeteria and stage area, and the area on the right with the lower roof is going to be the Library/Media Center. The small section of beams that jut out under the roofline on the right is a roof overhang in what will become the large, central courtyard. The construction is coming along quickly and looking great! Got a reader in your family? Or, want a little help inspiring someone to take up the habit? Check out...

Summer Wednesday Woof - 29 July 2020

When folks talk about the “lazy days of summer,” a lot of us think wistfully about our childhood, whether that conjures memories of family vacations, summer camps, or just having more time for relaxing around your regular spots: tanning on the beach or by the pool, escaping the heat by going to a movie theater for the latest blockbuster, or just laying in the grass outside your own home. Although movie theaters may not be an option, and some camps and travel plans may have been taken off the table, I hope you have all found opportunities for relaxing & enjoying good, safe social opportunities so far this summer! For teachers, this is a rich time because summer affords us an opportunity to focus on our own improvement. Many teachers come back from summer break talking about the books they’ve read, podcasts they’ve listened to, or courses they took. They are eager to adapt new ideas and strategies to their own classrooms, and to talk it through with their colleagues. This summer, m...

Woof - 13 June 2019

Feedback from the early responses to the South Poll make it very clear that parents & guardians appreciate the updates in the Woof and miss it when I don’t send one… So, here it is!   We’ve got a busy final few days coming, so this is a good time to get a Woof into your in-boxes!   If you haven’t filled out this year’s South Poll yet, please take this opportunity to do so: https://forms.gle/tUVohn9SvnU6vJ7MA . Eighth grade students enjoyed the opportunity to show off their Veterans Projects this Thursday.   A number of local veterans came in to see the students’ hard work on display and to speak to kids about their research and interviews.   One gentleman remarked to me what how important it was to him, after the GIs returning from Vietnam faced so many personal attacks at home, to have young people asking about their stories and honoring the soldiers’ sacrifices.   We’re proud of their efforts! Friday, 6/14, will be the 8 th grade Science Fair,...
