  A few quick notes from South: South Student Council is hosting our annual  Costume Contest tomorrow!  Students are encouraged to bring in a donation of $1-5 to support the Marge Crispin Center while sporting your Halloween costumes! Judges will consider a variety of categories, such as scariest, best DIY, best group, and more. Photo retakes will be Wednesday morning, 11/1.  If you ordered a photo package but want the portrait retaken, be sure to bring your original photos back to exchange them. If you missed the first photo day this fall, be ready to get your picture taken on Wednesday! Next Tuesday, there will be no school for Election Day.  If your polling place is South, voting will be held down back in our new gymnasium.  Don't forget to  Dine Out at Papa Gino's  on that day to support the South PTO!  The South PTO will host an  Election Day Bake Sale  outside the polling place.   Today is an Early Release Day with dismissal at 11:45am for middle schools. There will be no afterschool events while teachers attend a professional development workshop.  Tomorrow 10/26 is the  final day  to order South Gear from our online shop!  Go to  the South Spirit Wear Online Store  and order; your items will be delivered straight to your home  in time for the holidays .  School Photo Retake Day will be November 1st !  Any students who missed the first photo day or were not satisfied with your first photo will have the opportunity to have Hayward Photographers take your photo next Wednesday morning.  If you ordered a photo package and want a retake, make sure to bring the original photos with you to exchange them! Thank you to everyone who participated in Think Pink Day today, sporting your festive colors to raise awareness of breast cancer research & treatment and to show support for everyone affected by breast cancer. It was beautiful to see the school awash in pink!   (1.) The South PTO meets tonight in the Cafeteria. See attached Agenda, and we hope to see you at 7pm! (2.) After school activities are starting up now.  Check out  our calendar of weekly events  to see if any clubs & activities are of interest. South is  beyond  proud of some inspiring members of our community today. Gavin Flynn, Marina Whitelaw, Sophia Whitelaw, Ella Wood, and Connor Flynn (a former Bulldog!) participated in the unveiling of the K9 Kitt Statue and the new Police Officer Memorial at the Braintree Police Department this morning. Inspired by the heroism of K9 Kitt for his service to the community and his courageous, tragic sacrifice on June 4, 2021, these young students developed a plan to raise funds to honor him. They set up meetings with Mayor Kokoros, the Braintree Police, K9 Kitt's handler Officer Cushing, and the Braintree Police Working Dog Foundation to get approval for their plan and support for their fundraising efforts--earning admiration from all these adults along the way! Fundraising for a project they felt so strongly about became a passion project and their dedication paid off, amassing $23,000, far beyond their initial goal. Unity Day was a hit at South Middle School today! It was so great to see so many folks sporting their orange colors to stand up against bullying! School spirit is high this year, and we love to see it! (1.) On Friday is O.F.M. This is the major fundraiser for enrichment activities at South, so we're hoping every student will contribute something! You can still  sign up on SnapRaise  to send messages out to friends and family to raise donations. You can also bring in cash or check donations to your homeroom teacher. Checks should be payable to "South Middle School PTO" and any amount helps! (2.) Believe it or not, last Friday was the midterm for term 1. Teachers have been working all week to get grades up-to-date and to help students with makeup work and retakes.  All student grades will be up-to-date in Aspen tomorrow, Friday 10/13, to reflect their midterm standing.  If you have any concerns about your child's grade or academic progress, please contact their teacher directly. If you have overarching concerns, yo can reach out to Guidance or schedule a Parent-Teacher Conference. Instructions to sign up for conferences were sent out by teachers or teams earlier this week. Of course, grades should not be a surprise; middle school students should be able to work directly with their teachers to schedule afterschool extra help, ask about retakes or makeup work. Please make sure you're checking Aspen, as that is the primary way teachers will communicate with caregivers about students' progress.
