March 3 Woof - Upcoming Events at South

We have a number of fun events planned at South as we move into the Spring!

(1.) Trivia Night - Thursday, 3/24, 6:00-8:45 PM
Please see the flier & registration form for more information about Trivia Night. Student teams can register by returning the attached form to your homeroom teacher, or by filling out this online registration: Trivia Night Registration. If your child is interested in participating but hasn’t been able to form or join a team yet, please reach out to their Guidance Counselor or homeroom teacher for help getting them set up with a team that is looking for members. Mr. Sturtevant is also looking for help as he researches and writes the trivia challenges; students are invited to fill out the following questionnaire to share what topics they’re interested in: Trivia Topics 2022. This fun, team event was once an annual extravaganza at South, which we’re looking forward to reinvigorating this year!  If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Sturtevant or Ms. Evans for more information about Trivia Night.
(2.) Student Council Spring Carnival - Friday, 3/25
Student Council is planning a new event for South: the Carnival! More details will follow, such as when & how students will be able to purchase tickets to attend, but we could use a little help as the Student Council plans the events:
  • Do you have any lawn games that you are willing to lend or donate, such as Cornhole, large-size Jenga or Connect4, CanJam, Spike Ball, etc. or carnival-style games like ring toss, magnetic fishing, etc.?  (If you are lending, please put your name on every piece of equipment, if we’re going to have any hope of getting it all returned to you!) We will also be looking for a few EZ-Up style awnings, and if you happen to have any epic Selfie Photo Booth backdrops, please let us know!
  • There will be periodic raffle drawing throughout the Carnival, so we’re looking for donations of small-sum gift cards for kid-friendly stores, websites, and fast food ($5 is plenty, and no more than $10 on individual cards) for use as prizes.
  • Are you willing to help on that date for any period of time between dismissal and sunset? We’ll be looking for adult volunteers to help: taking tickets & checking students in; running student games and managing prizes; and handing out snacks; as well as help with setting up and/or breaking down the event. (If you have a high schooler or college student looking for community service hours, this is a great opportunity for responsible young adults!)  PTO will send out a Sign-Up link for volunteers.
(3.) South Book Fair - Tuesday, 3/29-Thursday, 3/31, 7:45-2:45 at South Media Center; extended hours on Thu 3/31, 3-6 PM; online sales through Sunday, 4/3. Students will have the opportunity to browse and select books in the Book Fair during their English class, so feel free to send them in with some cash on these dates to make purchases. Families are also invited to visit the Media Center on those days to browse the selections and make purchases, especially during the extended hours after school on Thursday, 3/31. Online sales will be available from Tuesday, 3/29 through Sunday, 4/3 to support the South Book Fair.  All proceeds support our school library in purchasing new books and resources for the Media Center.
(4.) Currently, the last day of school will fall on Thursday, 6/23. We are planning our Grade 8 Completion Ceremony and Appreciation Events for the evening of Tuesday, 6/21. If we have any more school closure days, these dates are subject to change, but I know 8th grade families want to get them penciled in on your calendars. Specific information about Grade 8 Appreciation events will follow as we get closer to the end of the school year.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact the school.

Opening the new South building

After years of planning, design, and construction, South Middle School will open its doors on September 6, 2023 to 5th grade through 8th grade in our new building!  This week, teachers got permission to start coming in to set up classrooms, and they have been dodging construction and subcontractor crews for the past few days, preparing their rooms and adding their personal touch to make the brand new spaces ready for the students.  The energy throughout the building is downright gleeful as folks see the light-filled classrooms, spacious hallways, and state-of-art facilities that will be supporting our students’ learning and growth going forward. Of course, the faculty is always excited to welcome a new class of scholars every fall, but this year takes that sense of rebirth and limitless possibility to a whole new level!  As eager as we are to welcome students and families to the new building, it is not yet safe to open our doors to the public. The construction team is putting on the fi

Wednesday Woof from South

We are immensely proud of our 7th grade English teacher, Mrs. Christine Norris, who was honored last night at the Norfolk County Teachers' Association annual awards ceremony. Mrs. Norris was nominated by her colleagues for the NCTA Honor Award, saying:  Christine’s contributions to South are immeasurable. She is the type of person who, if she’s going to do something, she’s going to take the time to do it right. This year alone, she’s co-running the Grade 8 Washington, D.C. trip, co-creating the Yearbook, co-creating the Field Day Murder Mystery activity, co-running the South dance, and co-running the South Student Council, which this year was combined with the Community Service club because, you guessed it, she runs that, too! When you ask her about running all of these things, she humbly downplays her involvement. Don’t let her fool you--she’s one of the hardest-working teachers at South.  To be honest, even that extensive list of projects is incomplete; Mrs. Norris is someone w

Grade 8 Upcoming Events

Grade 8 Students & Caregivers: Next week, your child is scheduled to participate in an MCAS grade 8 Civics field test on Monday, 6/3 and Tuesday, 6/4. In order to administer a new grade 8 Civics test in the future, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education must try out new test questions before the test becomes operational and scores can be provided to parents, schools, and districts. Your child’s participation is important and allows the state to build a valid and reliable test by helping to ensure a representative sample of students from across the state.   On Monday, 6/10, the 8th grade is taking the annual end-of-year trip to Level99 in Natick. Please make sure you have filled out the Level99 waiver  AND  the school's online permission slip in ParentSquare in order to participate. Contact a team teacher with any questions. Grade 8 Appreciation Night will be held at South on Thursday, 6/13, beginning at 6:00 PM. Families and loved ones are invited to join us for a
