Applying to private school? South Guidance can help

If you are considering applying to a private school, please read the following information from South's Guidance Department:

  • Pay attention to due dates! Make sure you know each of your school's deadlines and communicate with South staff as needed well in advance!
  • If you are applying to private school, students must fill out this Request Form:
  • To access application materials/portal, parents/guardians should go to the website of the school they are interested in:
    • Most schools use Ravenna for applications, recommendations, and transcript uploading, so parents need to create an account
      • Make sure that you enter your child's current school (South) and the correct email for their counselor
      • Filter requests to guidance counselors, not the school principal/assistant principal
      • We MUST have the transcript request/release form (from the new school or Ravenna) giving us written permission to send your transcript to the school.
    • Term 1 report cards will be released on 11/14. No private school applications will be started by South Guidance Counselors until the term 1 transcript has been posted.
  • Students must complete the counselor questionnaire and then allow at least (sometimes more at the highest demand times) two weeks for counselors to complete the Ravenna recommendation. Do not wait until the last minute & expect your request to take priority!
  • You will also need a recommendation from your current Math teacher, English teacher, and possibly other staff members, like a coach or advisor. South staff members are happy to fulfill this request, but please realize that it is a request. The student should speak to the teacher or send them a personal email prior to getting a request from the online portal. This gives the teacher an opportunity to talk to the student, which will in turn allows them to write a better recommendation. Please be aware that teachers will need at least 2 weeks to complete recommendation requests. Please do not wait until the last minute to send out your recommendation requests! It is also highly recommended that you acknolwedge anyone who writes a recommendation with a personal thank-you note!
  • Every application is treated with care and appropriate urgency.
    • Reminders, check-ins, and "urgent alerts" to staff members will not speed the process along
    • Last-minute requests take the same amount of time to process as timely requests, which means they may get submitted after deadlines have passed, if not submitted with sufficient prior notice.
Communicate early & respectfully and you will receive the same in response!

Thank you to Mrs. Norris and Mrs. Clark who coordinated the trip, to all the teachers who chaperoned overnight for 4 days, and to the students who represented South well! (1.) Bulldog Bulletin - 6/3/2025

Congratulations to all the students that participated in the Trills and Thrills music festival this past Friday - your hard work and effort paid off! Your playing and love for music impressed one of the adjudicators so much that he wrote an email to our superintendent letting him know how much he appreciated South Middle School’s music program!  7th & 8th grade orchestra won gold and the 7th & 8th grade Band and Concert Choir both earned silver.  This Thursday, 6/5, is the last day for Late Bus this school year. Students can still stay after for extra help, but you’ll need to arrange for a ride home or plan to walk! Homework Lab also ends this Thursday, so if you plan to stay after, you’ll need to make plans with one of your teachers. Don't forget! Bus registration ends next Friday, 6/13.  See the Districtwide post for bus registration information. Please check the Yearbook Sales list posted at your homeroom entrance.  If anyone thinks they purchased a y...

Three-fer Thursday from South! 5/22/2025

Three from South: (1.) Tomorrow--Friday, 5/23--South will host our annual Memorial Day Assembly starting at 1:00 PM. 8th graders have been working hard to prepare their Veterans Projects and a group will present them while our entire school honors local veterans and the fallen heroes of our Armed Services.  Students are encouraged to  wear red, white & blue  to show your patriotic spirit for our veterans and honored guests.  There will be  no student dismissals after 1pm , as it is too disruptive to the memorial assembly.  This year's assembly will be held in the large Gym due to the nor'easter, but guests are still welcome! If you would like to attend the assembly, please enter through the Main Entrance to get a visitors sticker and then proceed down to the Gym. Mark your calendars! All 8th grade Veterans Projects will be on display in the Media Center on Friday, 6/6, for the public to view and explore our students' research. If you're looking for an e...
