With the first full week back in school under our belts, and almost halfway through the second cycle of our rotating school schedule, it almost feels like we never had a summer vacation. Everyone is getting settled into the routine of new classes, new teachers, and new rules and expectations. With each week, we'll be getting more and more into the flow of the normal school year. Keep your eye out for extracurricular activities and clubs you may want to join!
BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT
Next Thursday, 9/18, South will open our doors for Back to School Night from 6:30-8:00 PM. Parents, guardians, and all adult caregivers are invited to come to the school to meet your child(ren)'s teachers and learn about the classes and curriculum. This event is "open house" style, so caregivers can drop in to see teachers anytime throughout that hour-and-a-half window; you do not have scheduled times to see the teachers. This event is not intended for students.
- Please print your child(ren)'s schedule or have them write down a list of all their teachers and room numbers, so you know who you're going to see!
- This event is not a time to talk about your individual child(ren) or any specific individual concerns. You can always email the teacher with specific questions/concerns, to share information about your individual child, or to request a phone call to discuss your child.
- Caregivers are encouraged to drop in to meet your child's Guidance Counselor, or you can request a scheduled time to meet with them if you have individualized concerns or general questions about the school or the grade.
- 5th grade: starting at 6:00 PM, Mr. Rainie will offer an optional Welcome Session for 5th grade parents/guardians in the Library/Media Center to introduce you to South Middle School and discuss the middle school in general. If this is your first child in middle school, we will go over what to expect this year, in the next four years, and how South is designed to support your incoming adolescent. This Welcome Session will be held in the Media Center from 6-6:30pm.
- 8th grade: starting at 6:00 PM, there will be an optional informational meeting in the Cafetorium to learn about the Washington DC trip. This is an optional overnight field trip for 8th graders from March 18-21, 2026. This meeting is not intended for students.
SCHOOL PICTURE DAY
Our annual School Picture Day is next Friday, September 19th, 2025 during the school day. On ParentSquare, please find the electronic version of the order form for student portraits. All the instructions are on the form, as well as the pre-order school code: SMSF25. If you order online, you do not need to bring any paper form back into the school. However, you can feel free to print the order form and bring that to school on Friday morning if you would prefer to use a paper order form.
- ONLINE ORDERS ARE STRONGLY RECOMMENDED. Go to www.HaywardPhotography.com and use school code SMSF25 to pre-order your photo package.
- The pre-order option will be available through Wednesday, September 24th at 7:00am. All photo orders will be mailed directly to the home addresses provided at checkout.
- If parents do not order by the pre-order deadline, their child will receive a "NO BUY" photo proof from the school in a few weeks with instructions on how they can order at that point. Please be advised that orders placed after the deadline are subject to higher package pricing and shipping/handling fees. The package options are different and some items may not be available.
SOUTH BULLDOG SOCCER
Tryouts for our 7th & 8th grade Bulldog Soccer teams were held this week. Congratulations to everyone who made the Boys or Girls team and thank you to everyone who tried out to represent South on the pitch this season! The first game will be against East MS at East on Wednesday, 9/17, starting at 3:15 PM. Good sportsmanship is expected from players and fans alike, and we hope to see a large & spirited crowd cheering our Bulldogs to victory over their crosstown rivals!
SPRING MUSICAL
This year's spring musical will be Annie, Jr.! There will be an informational meeting on 10/2 after school for all interested students. Whether you want to audition for a lead, perform in a group role, or support the show in a backstage role on Tech Crew, there's a place for everyone in South On Stage! Join us on 10/2 to find out more, or speak with Mr. Puglisi, Ms. Proulx, Ms. Ouellette, Ms. Littlewood, Ms. Benton, or Ms. Pyliotis for more information.
STUDENT COUNCIL
The first Student Council meeting will be held on Wednesday, 9/24, before school at 7:30 AM. Students will need to arrange for an early school arrival and meet in the Library Media Center. This meeting is open to all interested students. If you have questions about Student Council, this is the meeting to come to! See Ms. Corcoran, Ms. LaRossa, or Ms. Pendergast with any questions.
CONCERT CHOIR
Concert Choir is an afterschool student club that is open to 5-8th graders that enjoy singing and performing. Auditions will be held afterschool on Tuesday, September 16th. If your student makes the club, rehearsals will be on Tuesdays after school until 3:45 starting Sept 23 and run through Dec 8th (their Winter Concert) and February through the beginning of June. Each year Concert Choir has two required concerts held at South and several other optional out of school activities for students such as singing at the Providence Bruins and an end of the year Festival field trip. There is no cost to participate in the club but some of the optional activities have costs. There is financial assistance available for those that may need it.
If your student would like to audition, they need to fill out the sign-up sheet on the bulletin board outside the Chorus room 1086. At auditions, they will be asked to do a few vocal warm-ups and sing Happy Birthday for Ms. Ouellette. Once their audition is over, they should leave to go home. Please ask your student to let you know what time they sign-up for so you know what time to pick them up. I will do my best to keep auditions running on time but please allow for a 10-15 minute window based on the time your child selects. While auditions happen, students waiting to audition should work on homework or have a book to read so Ms. Ouellette can work individually with students. Inappropriate behavior during this time could affect participation. Due to an increased participation over the years, it is important to know that Ms. Ouellette will only be able to take around 50 students. If your student cannot participate in the fall but wants to in the Spring, please have them speak to Ms. Ouellette as soon as possible since space is limited.
Please email amy.ouellette@braintreeschools.org with any questions regarding participation or auditions for Concert Choir.
