Monday Woof - 4/4

Here's your quick 4 from South:

(1.) Community Service Club is running their annual Spring Food Drive throughout the month of April to support the Braintree Food Pantry. Non-perishable food items are always welcomed. The Food Pantry is also seeking: sponges, dishwasher detergent, toilet paper, paper towels, and laundry detergent. See Mrs. Norris in room 212 with any questions. The homeroom that brings in the most items will win a prize (but no opened packages please!)

(2.) For carpoolers: Traffic at morning dropoff is always tricky during MCAS testing days, and we anticipate that will be even worse this year, given the construction traffic. Here's my plug for dropping off at 7:45 AM and beating the crowd!
  • Please be on time--or early!--on your testing dates! Teachers will start the tests as soon as morning announcements are over, so everyone should be in their seats by 8:02.
  • To keep traffic flowing smoothly on Peach St, you are encouraged to move off to the side when waiting to take a turn. If you're turning right (coming from Liberty St.) please hug the right shoulder so passing traffic can continue past. If you're turning left, please hug the center line, in the hopes that passing traffic can continue slowly on the right.  (I'll be honest, this seems a little dicey--Peach St. is definitely not a 4-lane road--but it's worth a shot!)
  • Most importantly: please pull all the way down to the end of the building before letting your child/ren out! The photo below shows that it's the same distance to walk back to the front door as it is to walk up from the road, but people seem allergic to pulling down. It adds at least 4 car lengths, which makes traffic flow so much more quickly through our driveway. You're not a terrible parent if you pull down past the front door; you're an excellent neighbor!
(3.) Shout out to Nirmay G., who participated in THREE regional competitions this weekend, and advanced to the Nationals in all three! He came in 1st in the Science Bee, 3rd in the History Bee (which also qualifies him for the International History Olympiad), and 6th in the Geography Bee (which also qualifies him for the International Geo Bee). He is forgoing the international competitions, but is looking forward to competing at the Nationals in Orlando, FL in June. Our support and respect go with him for this wonderful opportunity!

(4.) Lunch menu for the month of April (also available on the Food Services website: https://schools.mealviewer.com/school/SouthMiddleS)

Wednesday Woof from South

We are immensely proud of our 7th grade English teacher, Mrs. Christine Norris, who was honored last night at the Norfolk County Teachers' Association annual awards ceremony. Mrs. Norris was nominated by her colleagues for the NCTA Honor Award, saying:  Christine’s contributions to South are immeasurable. She is the type of person who, if she’s going to do something, she’s going to take the time to do it right. This year alone, she’s co-running the Grade 8 Washington, D.C. trip, co-creating the Yearbook, co-creating the Field Day Murder Mystery activity, co-running the South dance, and co-running the South Student Council, which this year was combined with the Community Service club because, you guessed it, she runs that, too! When you ask her about running all of these things, she humbly downplays her involvement. Don’t let her fool you--she’s one of the hardest-working teachers at South.  To be honest, even that extensive list of projects is incomplete; Mrs. Norris is...

Grade 8 Upcoming Events

Grade 8 Students & Caregivers: Next week, your child is scheduled to participate in an MCAS grade 8 Civics field test on Monday, 6/3 and Tuesday, 6/4. In order to administer a new grade 8 Civics test in the future, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education must try out new test questions before the test becomes operational and scores can be provided to parents, schools, and districts. Your child’s participation is important and allows the state to build a valid and reliable test by helping to ensure a representative sample of students from across the state.   On Monday, 6/10, the 8th grade is taking the annual end-of-year trip to Level99 in Natick. Please make sure you have filled out the Level99 waiver  AND  the school's online permission slip in ParentSquare in order to participate. Contact a team teacher with any questions. Grade 8 Appreciation Night will be held at South on Thursday, 6/13, beginning at 6:00 PM. Families and loved ones are invited to joi...
