Opening the 2023-2024 School Year!

As we prepare the new building to welcome our first group of 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th graders into the expanded South Middle School, there are some important reminders and new announcements.

UPDATE YOUR ADDRESS BOOK
The new South Middle School's mailing address is 220 Peach St. (not 232 any longer). The phone number is the same (781-380-0160).

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL

Students will report to the new South Middle School building on Wednesday, September 6th. Homeroom starts at 8:02 AM, but everyone will want to make sure they arrive by 7:50 AM to get settled. Homerooms and schedules will be distributed on the first day. Dismissal is at 2:25 PM.

GETTING TO SCHOOL

  • Bus routes were sent out this week. Check your bus assignment, bus stop, and time carefully, as many routes changed this year to improve efficiency. If you did not receive a bus route but intend to ride a bus to school (and are eligible), make sure you have registered and paid. See the post last week from Assistant Superintendent Vernazza for more information: https://www.parentsquare.com/feeds/21807075.

  • Students may walk to school. Please stay off neighbors’ property and use any crosswalks on the way to and from school. There are bike racks available at the new school for students who choose to ride to school. You must wear a helmet, properly secured, if riding to school.

  • Carpoolers will drop off and pick up in front of the new school. More detailed traffic information will be sent in the coming days. Please do not drop off before 7:40 AM.

FINAL DAYS OF SUMMER

  • Be sure to finish all your summer reading work!

  • Classroom supply lists are on the website. For the first day, all you will need is a notebook and something to write with, but if you want to get a jump on shopping, supply lists are available on the South website

    • Please note: the school will provide all students with a lock for your locker. Please do not purchase your own lock; personal locks may not used on school lockers.

  • South serves breakfast and lunch daily in the Cafeteria, and all students are eligible for one free meal for each. Students still need to enter their student ID number to “purchase” their food, including the free meals. You may purchase a second lunch if you choose.

    • Student lunch IDs stay the same each year

    • Free & reduced meal applications need to be renewed every year. Although lunches are automatically free, please register if eligible and interested in receiving financial aid on other school fees and expenses.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS

  • School Picture Day is Friday, September 15th during school

Wednesday Woof from South

We are immensely proud of our 7th grade English teacher, Mrs. Christine Norris, who was honored last night at the Norfolk County Teachers' Association annual awards ceremony. Mrs. Norris was nominated by her colleagues for the NCTA Honor Award, saying:  Christine’s contributions to South are immeasurable. She is the type of person who, if she’s going to do something, she’s going to take the time to do it right. This year alone, she’s co-running the Grade 8 Washington, D.C. trip, co-creating the Yearbook, co-creating the Field Day Murder Mystery activity, co-running the South dance, and co-running the South Student Council, which this year was combined with the Community Service club because, you guessed it, she runs that, too! When you ask her about running all of these things, she humbly downplays her involvement. Don’t let her fool you--she’s one of the hardest-working teachers at South.  To be honest, even that extensive list of projects is incomplete; Mrs. Norris is...

Grade 8 Upcoming Events

Grade 8 Students & Caregivers: Next week, your child is scheduled to participate in an MCAS grade 8 Civics field test on Monday, 6/3 and Tuesday, 6/4. In order to administer a new grade 8 Civics test in the future, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education must try out new test questions before the test becomes operational and scores can be provided to parents, schools, and districts. Your child’s participation is important and allows the state to build a valid and reliable test by helping to ensure a representative sample of students from across the state.   On Monday, 6/10, the 8th grade is taking the annual end-of-year trip to Level99 in Natick. Please make sure you have filled out the Level99 waiver  AND  the school's online permission slip in ParentSquare in order to participate. Contact a team teacher with any questions. Grade 8 Appreciation Night will be held at South on Thursday, 6/13, beginning at 6:00 PM. Families and loved ones are invited to joi...
