Bulldog Bulletin - Wednesday, 11/20

Tomorrow is an early release day and dismissal for middle schools will be at 11:45 AM. We will follow a Day 6 schedule with shortened periods, so students should plan to see all of their classes. Students wanting a Grab-N-Go Lunch free from our cafeteria must order one in advance: Click Here to Submit Your Order.

Welcome to Marc Quigley, the "second chair" School Nurse in our Health Office, who was appointed by the School Committee on Monday evening!

Do you have old magazines lying around the house, chock full of great photography & artwork? Send them in to South for use in our Art classrooms! Art teachers are always looking for visual models kids can use to inspire their creativity.

Want to earn some extra spending money for the holiday season? Got kids returning from campus or on the job market? The Braintree Public Schools District is always looking for substitute teachers and substitute paraeducatorsWith a number of young people returning home for the holidays, this is a great opportunity to apply to be a substitute.
  • Apply online, get your paperwork filled out (CORI check, etc.), and schedule an interview with a principal at one of your old schools.
  • Then, when you're back home next month, on spring break, or after classes end in May, you'll be able to sign up for sub jobs on our online portal and earn some extra spending money!
As older siblings make plans to return home, send them the links to apply and tell them to email me or call to request an interview while they're in town. We'll be glad to have the extra hands "on deck" in December and we'd love to show off the new South to our alumni!

Did you know?
South Middle School can provide MBTA student passes for your child to get the student T fare and skip the initial fee for the Charlie Card. A parent/guardian can request a T pass from your Guidance Counselor or the Principal. We appreciate the MBTA's outreach to support students who participate in clubs & activities in the city and benefit from easy access to public transportation!

South Middle School was recently rated #74 out of 1,072 Massachusetts Middle Schools by U.S. News and World Report. That puts us in the 93rd percentile! This report is just one measure, and should be taken with a grain of salt of course, but it is nice to have our staff's efforts and good work recognized. You can read more about South's ranking herehttps://www.usnews.com/education/k12/massachusetts/south-middle-school-268492.

Wednesday Woof from South

We are immensely proud of our 7th grade English teacher, Mrs. Christine Norris, who was honored last night at the Norfolk County Teachers' Association annual awards ceremony. Mrs. Norris was nominated by her colleagues for the NCTA Honor Award, saying:  Christine’s contributions to South are immeasurable. She is the type of person who, if she’s going to do something, she’s going to take the time to do it right. This year alone, she’s co-running the Grade 8 Washington, D.C. trip, co-creating the Yearbook, co-creating the Field Day Murder Mystery activity, co-running the South dance, and co-running the South Student Council, which this year was combined with the Community Service club because, you guessed it, she runs that, too! When you ask her about running all of these things, she humbly downplays her involvement. Don’t let her fool you--she’s one of the hardest-working teachers at South.  To be honest, even that extensive list of projects is incomplete; Mrs. Norris is...

Grade 8 Upcoming Events

Grade 8 Students & Caregivers: Next week, your child is scheduled to participate in an MCAS grade 8 Civics field test on Monday, 6/3 and Tuesday, 6/4. In order to administer a new grade 8 Civics test in the future, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education must try out new test questions before the test becomes operational and scores can be provided to parents, schools, and districts. Your child’s participation is important and allows the state to build a valid and reliable test by helping to ensure a representative sample of students from across the state.   On Monday, 6/10, the 8th grade is taking the annual end-of-year trip to Level99 in Natick. Please make sure you have filled out the Level99 waiver  AND  the school's online permission slip in ParentSquare in order to participate. Contact a team teacher with any questions. Grade 8 Appreciation Night will be held at South on Thursday, 6/13, beginning at 6:00 PM. Families and loved ones are invited to joi...
