South Cinco - Thursday 10/19

South is beyond proud of some inspiring members of our community today. Gavin Flynn, Marina Whitelaw, Sophia Whitelaw, Ella Wood, and Connor Flynn (a former Bulldog!) participated in the unveiling of the K9 Kitt Statue and the new Police Officer Memorial at the Braintree Police Department this morning. Inspired by the heroism of K9 Kitt for his service to the community and his courageous, tragic sacrifice on June 4, 2021, these young students developed a plan to raise funds to honor him. They set up meetings with Mayor Kokoros, the Braintree Police, K9 Kitt's handler Officer Cushing, and the Braintree Police Working Dog Foundation to get approval for their plan and support for their fundraising efforts--earning admiration from all these adults along the way! Fundraising for a project they felt so strongly about became a passion project and their dedication paid off, amassing $23,000, far beyond their initial goal. With these funds, the students' tireless efforts, and their thorough dedication to the cause, Gavin, Marina, Sophia, Ella, and Connor were able to bring their vision into reality. As Police Chief Cohoon said, "these students should be honored for being positive role models to their peers and community," and we couldn't agree more! Truly impressive!

Looking ahead to next week...
  • Tuesday, 10/24 is Think Pink Day! October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and all South Bulldogs are encouraged to wear PINK to raise awareness of Breast Cancer and show support for folks battling breast cancer, breast cancer survivors, and all their friends & loved ones. Braintree METCO is leading the charge with Think Pink Day for all members of our community to show your support for everyone impacted by breast cancer!
  • The next meeting of the South PTO will be Tuesday, 10/24 @ 7pm in the new South Cafetorium. Agenda to follow.
  • Wednesday, 10/25 is an Early Release Day. Dismissal is at 11:45 AM for middle schools. You can pre-order a school lunch to takeaway with this link! We will follow a Day 5 schedule with shortened blocks so students can expect to see all their classes. There will be no afterschool activities, as teachers will be in an afternoon training session.

Don't forget to wear your Class Colors for OFM tomorrow!
Cash/check donations for OFM will still be collected in the Main Office. Make sure the student's name & homeroom appear on the memo line/envelope.

Wednesday Woof from South

We are immensely proud of our 7th grade English teacher, Mrs. Christine Norris, who was honored last night at the Norfolk County Teachers' Association annual awards ceremony. Mrs. Norris was nominated by her colleagues for the NCTA Honor Award, saying:  Christine’s contributions to South are immeasurable. She is the type of person who, if she’s going to do something, she’s going to take the time to do it right. This year alone, she’s co-running the Grade 8 Washington, D.C. trip, co-creating the Yearbook, co-creating the Field Day Murder Mystery activity, co-running the South dance, and co-running the South Student Council, which this year was combined with the Community Service club because, you guessed it, she runs that, too! When you ask her about running all of these things, she humbly downplays her involvement. Don’t let her fool you--she’s one of the hardest-working teachers at South.  To be honest, even that extensive list of projects is incomplete; Mrs. Norris is...

Your child’s participation is important and allows the state to build a valid and reliable test by helping to ensure a representative sample of students from across the state.   On Monday, 6/10, the 8th grade is taking the annual end-of-year trip to Level99 in Natick. Please make sure you have filled out the Level99 waiver  AND  the school's online permission slip in ParentSquare in order to participate. Contact a team teacher with any questions.
