NO SCHOOL - Monday, 26 January 2026

There will be NO SCHOOL in Braintree Public Schools on Monday, January 26th, 2026, due to the ongoing snowstorm. When school gets cancelled, there are 2 important things to remember at South Middle School:

  • We skip that day of the cycle. 1/26 was scheduled to be a Day 6. We will skip day 6 this cycle, and plan to follow a Day 1 schedule on Tuesday, 1/27.
  • We add one day to the calendar in June. The last day of school is currently projected to be Thursday, 6/18, due to this cancellation. Good news for us that our new South building has air conditioning!
There are also a few unique considerations with the close of school tomorrow:
  • 1/26 was the last day of term 2 (the 2nd quarter of the school year) and the last day of semester 1 (the first half of the school year). Semester 2 is still scheduled to begin on Tuesday, 1/27. This means some students may have a slight change to their schedule if they have any semester-long courses, such as Health or 1/2-year Art. Students can log into Aspen and check their semester 2 schedules so they know what to expect on Tuesday. If you're having any trouble with this, don't worry! Your homeroom teacher or guidance counselor will be able to help answer any schedule questions when we return to school. Most South students will not have a change in their schedules, or if they do, it will be a minor change to 1 or 2 blocks in their day.
  • 8th Grade Completion Ceremony events and the students' dinner-dance will be rescheduled one day later at this time. It is now tentatively scheduled for the evening of Tuesday, June 16thThis date is still subject to change, especially if there are future cancellations of school due to snow/weather. However, I know families like to plan summer travel, work schedules, etc., and we'll do our best to communicate about these dates as early as we can.
  • Term dates and MCAS Testing Dates will not be rescheduled at this time. Although MCAS is no longer required for high school graduation, the annual testing regime is still mandated by the state, so we ask families to do your best to coordinate appointments, travel, etc. around these dates.
  • As a reminder, Braintree Schools will have an Early Dismissal day on Thursday, 1/29. Dismissal for middle schools is 11:45 AM. Order a grab-n-go lunch from our cafeteria free of charge by filling out the form on BPS Food Services' website in advance.
Stay safe, but I also hope you'll take time to enjoy this New England weather! Get outside for sledding or just walking through the quiet of a good snowstorm, cozy up with a good book & a cup of cocoa, or take advantage of the "free day" to check some items off your To-Do List. Better yet, do a little of each! First and foremost, of course: go Pats! Turn off your alarm clocks for the morning and enjoy the playoff games without worrying about when to wake up!

With all best wishes,
Damon Rainie

Three-fer Thursday from South! 5/22/2025

Three from South: (1.) Tomorrow--Friday, 5/23--South will host our annual Memorial Day Assembly starting at 1:00 PM. 8th graders have been working hard to prepare their Veterans Projects and a group will present them while our entire school honors local veterans and the fallen heroes of our Armed Services.  Students are encouraged to  wear red, white & blue  to show your patriotic spirit for our veterans and honored guests.  There will be  no student dismissals after 1pm , as it is too disruptive to the memorial assembly.  This year's assembly will be held in the large Gym due to the nor'easter, but guests are still welcome! If you would like to attend the assembly, please enter through the Main Entrance to get a visitors sticker and then proceed down to the Gym. Mark your calendars! All 8th grade Veterans Projects will be on display in the Media Center on Friday, 6/6, for the public to view and explore our students' research. If you're looking for an e...

Bulldog Bulletin - 6/3/2025

Congratulations to all the students that participated in the Trills and Thrills music festival this past Friday - your hard work and effort paid off! Your playing and love for music impressed one of the adjudicators so much that he wrote an email to our superintendent letting him know how much he appreciated South Middle School’s music program!  7th & 8th grade orchestra won gold and the 7th & 8th grade Band and Concert Choir both earned silver.  This Thursday, 6/5, is the last day for Late Bus this school year. Students can still stay after for extra help, but you’ll need to arrange for a ride home or plan to walk! Homework Lab also ends this Thursday, so if you plan to stay after, you’ll need to make plans with one of your teachers. Don't forget! Bus registration ends next Friday, 6/13.  See the Districtwide post for bus registration information. Please check the Yearbook Sales list posted at your homeroom entrance.  If anyone thinks they purchased a y...

The Build Up program is an optional orientation for our newest Bulldogs to get a "sneak peek" of what to expect at South Middle. Students will tour the building so they feel more comfortable, and they will learn about important middle school topics such as:  Class schedule Behavior expectations  Locks and lockers Clubs & activities Homework Guidance counselors Computers & BYOD (“Bring Your Own Device”) Lunch & recess School etiquette Organization This is a great way for our newest students to connect with South staff and their new classmates. It is very exciting to see where they will spend their middle school years. Feel free to have your child write down any questions and we will be sure to get them answered.
