Parents Book Club at South

Next week, the community reading group at South will meet to begin discussing Jonathan Haidt's book, The Anxious GenerationI hope you'll join us!

All are invited to meet in the South Media Center on TUESDAY, 2/4 at 7:00 PM to discuss the first 2 parts of Haidt's book.
  • The Introduction & "A Tidal Wave: The Surge of Suffering" lay out the landscape of adolescents' plummeting mental wellness over the past 15-20 years.
  • In Part 2, "The Backstory: The Decline of the Play-Based Childhood," Haidt explores parenting & societal changes and the impacts on kids' social skills and development.
In all, it's about 110 pages of reading, but it's not hard reading. Also, a bunch of the South teachers are listening to the audiobook and said it's good, if that's easier for you!
After February break, we'll meet on 2/25 to discuss the next section, where Haidt lays out the current setting for adolescents in a smartphone-enabled, social-media filled world. On 3/18, we'll discuss the final section where Haidt recommends steps we can take right now to improve things for our kids. What does South/Braintree agree with? What's working well & what are other towns doing? What else could we do? If you can only make it to 1 or 2 sessions, feel free to join the conversation. Or, plan to join for whichever sections interest you. Sign up in advance--https://forms.gle/kCYKACH9tJdm5ey58--or just drop in!

I'm interested, but I didn't order the book yet. What should I do?
Amazon delivers quickly and the hardcover is still 47% off. Each chapter has a bullet-point summary, so even if you don't finish all the reading, you'll be able to skim quickly and get the idea of what Haidt's talking about. There is really no pressure to have read every word; if the discussion is the best way for you to gather the information, I hope you'll join us.

I can't come to all the meetings. What should I do?
Join us for whatever nights you can make it. No pressure!

What if I'm not sure I'll be available?

Walk-ins are welcome! Or, if you can't make it at 7 but will be available later, drop on by. Invite your friends, neighbors, and your kids' teammates, even if they don't go to South. A big piece of Haidt's recommendations is that changes can be made if there's strength in numbers. Even if you can't attend, I hope you'll consider reading the book. The more people who are armed with this information, the better off our kids will be. If you are interested in reading The Anxious Generation, you can try to check the book out from the library, or purchase it:Be prepared for an emotional response to the book. The teachers who are reading or listening to it for South's professional reading group have talked about needing to put it down at certain points when they've been overcome thinking about the world we're raising our children in. Together, we can find ways to make things better!

Wednesday Woof from South

We are immensely proud of our 7th grade English teacher, Mrs. Christine Norris, who was honored last night at the Norfolk County Teachers' Association annual awards ceremony. Mrs. Norris was nominated by her colleagues for the NCTA Honor Award, saying:  Christine’s contributions to South are immeasurable. She is the type of person who, if she’s going to do something, she’s going to take the time to do it right. This year alone, she’s co-running the Grade 8 Washington, D.C. trip, co-creating the Yearbook, co-creating the Field Day Murder Mystery activity, co-running the South dance, and co-running the South Student Council, which this year was combined with the Community Service club because, you guessed it, she runs that, too! When you ask her about running all of these things, she humbly downplays her involvement. Don’t let her fool you--she’s one of the hardest-working teachers at South.  To be honest, even that extensive list of projects is incomplete; Mrs. Norris is...

Grade 8 Upcoming Events

Grade 8 Students & Caregivers: Next week, your child is scheduled to participate in an MCAS grade 8 Civics field test on Monday, 6/3 and Tuesday, 6/4. In order to administer a new grade 8 Civics test in the future, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education must try out new test questions before the test becomes operational and scores can be provided to parents, schools, and districts. Your child’s participation is important and allows the state to build a valid and reliable test by helping to ensure a representative sample of students from across the state.   On Monday, 6/10, the 8th grade is taking the annual end-of-year trip to Level99 in Natick. Please make sure you have filled out the Level99 waiver  AND  the school's online permission slip in ParentSquare in order to participate. Contact a team teacher with any questions. Grade 8 Appreciation Night will be held at South on Thursday, 6/13, beginning at 6:00 PM. Families and loved ones are invited to joi...

Opening the new South building

After years of planning, design, and construction, South Middle School will open its doors on September 6, 2023 to 5th grade through 8th grade in our new building!  This week, teachers got permission to start coming in to set up classrooms, and they have been dodging construction and subcontractor crews for the past few days, preparing their rooms and adding their personal touch to make the brand new spaces ready for the students.  The energy throughout the building is downright gleeful as folks see the light-filled classrooms, spacious hallways, and state-of-art facilities that will be supporting our students’ learning and growth going forward. Of course, the faculty is always excited to welcome a new class of scholars every fall, but this year takes that sense of rebirth and limitless possibility to a whole new level!  As eager as we are to welcome students and families to the new building, it is not yet safe to open our doors to the public. The construction team is put...
