Three from South - 12/18/2023

Greetings on a blustery Monday morning!

Spirit Week & Charity
This week is Spirit Week at South, thanks to our Student Council who came up with the attached daily themes.

Friday is Ugly Sweater Day, a long-standing tradition among the South faculty where staff members would annually select a cause to support and then bring in donations in exchange for a "casual day." In the past decade, professional casual attire has become the norm for staff but the festive tradition of giving has carried on and we continue to collect for a local charity while sporting our gaudy gear.

For the past few years, Student Council has adopted the tradition for a schoolwide Ugly Sweater Day and all members of the community are encouraged to dress up (or, dress down, as it were) and donate. This year's charity is Marisa's Mission, a local charity that raises funds to provide direct support to families dealing with medical hardship, to provide resources beyond the medical bills for family members.

Students are asked to donate $1 or more on Friday. We're hoping to send a big contribution over to Marisa's Mission!

Gratitude for Staff
Folks have been asking what's the best way to recognize teachers and South staff with gifts at this time of year.
  • There's a long-standing tradition of families sending in cookies and treats all week long to be placed in the South teachers room. Send us your sweet, your salty, your savory umami... yearning to be eatenJust don't tell our significant others or primary care physicians!
  • On Friday, PTO is sponsoring a visit from the espresso bar! Espresso Dave has been a hit at South on special occasions for the past few years. Contributions to pay his tab can be sent via check made out to "South PTO" or Venmo to @Lisa-Howland (our PTO President) with "South Staff Gift" in the memo line. Extra funds will be used to purchase gift cards to raffle off to staff members.
  • A handmade gift or nice note from a student always speaks volumes, so please don't feel pressured to purchase gifts for your children's teachers. For those who choose to, please be aware that under state law, the total value of any and all individual gifts over the course of any calendar year cannot exceed $50.
  • Teacher or team gifts for classroom use are a welcome alternative. Send in Expo markers, tissues, or other rooms to help keep the classrooms functioning!
  • Please note, our new shipping address is 220 Peach St.

Lost and Found
The Lost & Found is out of control. Please come look for any items that may be missing or unaccounted for. Unclaimed items will be donated to charity over the break.

Wednesday Woof from South

We are immensely proud of our 7th grade English teacher, Mrs. Christine Norris, who was honored last night at the Norfolk County Teachers' Association annual awards ceremony. Mrs. Norris was nominated by her colleagues for the NCTA Honor Award, saying:  Christine’s contributions to South are immeasurable. She is the type of person who, if she’s going to do something, she’s going to take the time to do it right. This year alone, she’s co-running the Grade 8 Washington, D.C. trip, co-creating the Yearbook, co-creating the Field Day Murder Mystery activity, co-running the South dance, and co-running the South Student Council, which this year was combined with the Community Service club because, you guessed it, she runs that, too! When you ask her about running all of these things, she humbly downplays her involvement. Don’t let her fool you--she’s one of the hardest-working teachers at South.  To be honest, even that extensive list of projects is incomplete; Mrs. Norris is...

Grade 8 Upcoming Events

Grade 8 Students & Caregivers: Next week, your child is scheduled to participate in an MCAS grade 8 Civics field test on Monday, 6/3 and Tuesday, 6/4. In order to administer a new grade 8 Civics test in the future, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education must try out new test questions before the test becomes operational and scores can be provided to parents, schools, and districts. Your child’s participation is important and allows the state to build a valid and reliable test by helping to ensure a representative sample of students from across the state.   On Monday, 6/10, the 8th grade is taking the annual end-of-year trip to Level99 in Natick. Please make sure you have filled out the Level99 waiver  AND  the school's online permission slip in ParentSquare in order to participate. Contact a team teacher with any questions. Grade 8 Appreciation Night will be held at South on Thursday, 6/13, beginning at 6:00 PM. Families and loved ones are invited to joi...
