Bulldog Bulletin - South Sunday Night News

Tomorrow is a Day 4 at South Middle School. This means students will be meeting some of their half-cycle course teachers for the first time. All majors will meet as usual, while our 5th and 6th graders are getting used to the middle school schedule rotation. (I will send out a digital Days of the Cycle calendar later this week; the paper-based version is attached on ParentSquare.)

SCHOOL PHOTOS - Friday, September 15
In ParentSquare, please find the order form for South Middle School’s Picture Day scheduled for Friday, September 15th 2023 during the school day. All the instructions are on the form, as well as the pre-order school code. ONLINE ORDERS ARE PREFERRED AND STRONGLY RECOMMENDED. No forms need to be returned by parents/guardians. The preorder option will be available through Wednesday, September 20th at 8:00am. All print orders will be mailed directly to the home addresses provided at checkout. If parents do not order by the deadline, their child will receive a NO BUY proof card with instructions on how they can order at that point. The no-buys cards will be sent to the school for distribution at a later date. **Please be advised**: FEES ARE MUCH MORE AFFORDABLE IN THE PREORDER OPTIONS. Fees for individual orders, package options, pricing and shipping/handling fees are much higher from the No-Buy selections. If you preorder but are unhappy with the print, we have found Hayward Photography will go to great lengths to ensure your satisfaction. A photo retake day will be scheduled for later in the fall.

AFTERSCHOOL ACTIVITIES
Student activities will be starting up soon.
  • The Late Bus will be available for bus riders starting on 9/18.
  • Homework Lab is available in the Media Center, Monday to Thursday starting 9/18, from 2:25-3:15pm daily. No sign-up is required; students can drop in" as often as they would like. Students must have school work to complete and must come prepared to work in order to take advantage of the HW Lab. South's paraprofessionals staff the HW Lab daily, so it is a great opportunity to get a start on your homework, to ask any questions that might come up and get answers from the folks who know!
  • South Soccer tryouts for 7th and 8th graders will be held this Tuesday and Wednesday. Details were sent under separate cover.
Keep an eye out for other extracurricular opportunities to get involved!
Although it is not a school-sponsored activity, girls who are interested in joining a running club might be interested in the attached Girls on the Run flyer.
MARK YOUR CALENDAR!
Thursday, September 21, 6-8pm - South Middle School Back to School Night (more information to follow)
Tuesday, September 26 - Early Dismissal for teacher professional development - 11:45am dismissal for middle schools

Wednesday Woof from South

We are immensely proud of our 7th grade English teacher, Mrs. Christine Norris, who was honored last night at the Norfolk County Teachers' Association annual awards ceremony. Mrs. Norris was nominated by her colleagues for the NCTA Honor Award, saying:  Christine’s contributions to South are immeasurable. She is the type of person who, if she’s going to do something, she’s going to take the time to do it right. This year alone, she’s co-running the Grade 8 Washington, D.C. trip, co-creating the Yearbook, co-creating the Field Day Murder Mystery activity, co-running the South dance, and co-running the South Student Council, which this year was combined with the Community Service club because, you guessed it, she runs that, too! When you ask her about running all of these things, she humbly downplays her involvement. Don’t let her fool you--she’s one of the hardest-working teachers at South.  To be honest, even that extensive list of projects is incomplete; Mrs. Norris is...

Grade 8 Upcoming Events

Grade 8 Students & Caregivers: Next week, your child is scheduled to participate in an MCAS grade 8 Civics field test on Monday, 6/3 and Tuesday, 6/4. In order to administer a new grade 8 Civics test in the future, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education must try out new test questions before the test becomes operational and scores can be provided to parents, schools, and districts. Your child’s participation is important and allows the state to build a valid and reliable test by helping to ensure a representative sample of students from across the state.   On Monday, 6/10, the 8th grade is taking the annual end-of-year trip to Level99 in Natick. Please make sure you have filled out the Level99 waiver  AND  the school's online permission slip in ParentSquare in order to participate. Contact a team teacher with any questions. Grade 8 Appreciation Night will be held at South on Thursday, 6/13, beginning at 6:00 PM. Families and loved ones are invited to joi...
