Wednesday Woof - March 8th

Today is Midterm for Term 3. Teachers will be grading materials and updating midterm averages over the next week. Please check Aspen and Google Classroom now to see if anything is missing, or if there are any low grades that are eligible for retakes, and your child should make plans with their teacher to stay after if necessary. Class averages will be up-to-date as of midterm by next Wednesday, 3/15.

8th Graders' Course Selection Sheets for Grade 9 are due Friday! Thank you to everyone who has already returned your yellow "course requests" sheet that was mailed home. If you need a new copy, please come to the Main Office to get a print out. Any questions, please contact your Guidance Counselor. Even if you're not planning to attend Braintree High in the fall, you must return your course selection sheet; all high schools request those to start their own scheduling process. 6th and 7th graders' course selection sheets will be mailed home later this month.

Our March PTO meeting will be held Tuesday, 3/14, at 7pm in the South Media Center. Agenda to follow.

South's 9th Annual Trivia Night will be held on Thursday, 3/16, from 6:00pm-8:45pm. Students should assemble teams of 3-4 South students plus 1 adult coach. Students cost $5 each (adults are free & scholarships are available). You will compete in a series of trivia challenges for bragging rights against other members of your grade (no cross-grade teams, please!) and for candy! Teams should select a theme & team name and are encouraged to dress in costume to add to the festivity of Trivia Night. Adult coaches can be a parent/guardian, staff member, grandparent/aunt/uncle/sibling (high school senior or older)/cousin, family friend/neighbor, community leader... the sky's the limit! Contact Mr. Sturtevant or Ms. Evans with any questions; contact your Guidance Counselor if you're looking for a team to join. All funds raised will benefit the DC Trip. Sign up today!

There are still a few spots open for the final South Ski Trip to Pat's Peak this Saturday. Contact Mr. Boynton for a registration packet if interested.

The Spring Musical Tech Crew is being assembled as we speak! If your child is interested in helping with scenery, props, costumes, concessions, tickets, etc. make sure they join the South Google Classroom (afy4akh) and fill out the Tech Crew Questionnaire by this Friday. If they missed Tuesday's informational meeting, see Mr. Puglisi in room 208 with any questions.

For all 8th graders attending this year's field trip to Washington, D.C., there will be a mandatory informational meeting this Thursday, 3/9, at 5:30pm in the South Auditorium. See Mr. Puglisi or Ms. Norris with any questions. The DC trip will run from March 22-25, 2023.

Monday, 3/14 is an Early Release Day for Teacher Professional Development. Dismissal will be at 11:45am and we will follow a shortened-block schedule as usual, so students will see all of their Day 3 classes on Monday. A link will be sent later this week from Food Services for those who would like to reserve a bag lunch.

MCAS testing will take place in April and May. There are make up days available, but to the extent possible, please try to schedule appointments and travel around these scheduled dates.
Happy International Women's Day! Some Bulldog ambassadors along with Ms. Ricci hung a display in honor of Women's History Month to learn more about pathbreaking women throughout the month of March. This week, we're honoring Kathrine Switzer, the first female to run in the Boston Marathon. We salute all our moms, female caregivers, and the women who make up our staff!

Wednesday Woof from South

We are immensely proud of our 7th grade English teacher, Mrs. Christine Norris, who was honored last night at the Norfolk County Teachers' Association annual awards ceremony. Mrs. Norris was nominated by her colleagues for the NCTA Honor Award, saying:  Christine’s contributions to South are immeasurable. She is the type of person who, if she’s going to do something, she’s going to take the time to do it right. This year alone, she’s co-running the Grade 8 Washington, D.C. trip, co-creating the Yearbook, co-creating the Field Day Murder Mystery activity, co-running the South dance, and co-running the South Student Council, which this year was combined with the Community Service club because, you guessed it, she runs that, too! When you ask her about running all of these things, she humbly downplays her involvement. Don’t let her fool you--she’s one of the hardest-working teachers at South.  To be honest, even that extensive list of projects is incomplete; Mrs. Norris is...

Grade 8 Upcoming Events

Grade 8 Students & Caregivers: Next week, your child is scheduled to participate in an MCAS grade 8 Civics field test on Monday, 6/3 and Tuesday, 6/4. In order to administer a new grade 8 Civics test in the future, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education must try out new test questions before the test becomes operational and scores can be provided to parents, schools, and districts. Your child’s participation is important and allows the state to build a valid and reliable test by helping to ensure a representative sample of students from across the state.   On Monday, 6/10, the 8th grade is taking the annual end-of-year trip to Level99 in Natick. Please make sure you have filled out the Level99 waiver  AND  the school's online permission slip in ParentSquare in order to participate. Contact a team teacher with any questions. Grade 8 Appreciation Night will be held at South on Thursday, 6/13, beginning at 6:00 PM. Families and loved ones are invited to joi...

Opening the new South building

After years of planning, design, and construction, South Middle School will open its doors on September 6, 2023 to 5th grade through 8th grade in our new building!  This week, teachers got permission to start coming in to set up classrooms, and they have been dodging construction and subcontractor crews for the past few days, preparing their rooms and adding their personal touch to make the brand new spaces ready for the students.  The energy throughout the building is downright gleeful as folks see the light-filled classrooms, spacious hallways, and state-of-art facilities that will be supporting our students’ learning and growth going forward. Of course, the faculty is always excited to welcome a new class of scholars every fall, but this year takes that sense of rebirth and limitless possibility to a whole new level!  As eager as we are to welcome students and families to the new building, it is not yet safe to open our doors to the public. The construction team is put...
