Technology Tip - Aspen Alerts!

Did you know...
You can set up your Aspen account to alert you when your child has a low grade posted in any class?
Set up Notifications in your Aspen account settings and never have to worry about a surprise on the report card again!
Follow the instructions below to set up email notifications for your parent account on Aspen. It is recommended to set the grade threshold to 60% to alert you to any failing grades.
You may also choose to set the grade threshold to 70% for 7th/8th graders and to 75% for 5th/6th graders, so you will know if your child has received a poor grade or may be eligible to improve their score by completing a retake or submitting corrections.

See below for guidance on setting up Aspen email notifications (from the BPS Tech Department Aspen FAQ site).
If you have any questions about your child's academic progress, don't hesitate to contact their Guidance Counselor or the Main Office.
It's always best to reach out directly to their teacher with any specific questions.
Tech support is available for students in our Media Center each morning, or parents can reach out through the Family Help Desk (click here) to reach the BPS Tech Department.

How do I sign up for attendance and grade notification emails in Aspen?

Parents and students can receive email notifications for attendance and grade entries in Aspen. The system allows you to subscribe to these notifications. They are not sent until you subscribe to them. Messages are only sent if you subscribe and if an attendance or grade event as described below has been entered that day.

  • Attendance: This subscription notifies you of any attendance entry for your student.

  • Grades: This subscription notifies you when any assignment grades below a specified threshold are entered for your student. Grades are scaled as a % from 0 to 100. If your student receives a class assignment or test grade that is below the specified threshold, a notification will be sent to your email address. The threshold should be a number from 0 to 100. For example, an entry of 75 would trigger a notification for any grade entered that scaled below 75%.

Sign Up for Email Notifications
  • Log into your Parent or Student Aspen Account.

  • Click on Set Preferences in the upper right.

  • Click on the Security Tab.

  • Enter your email address in the Primary Email Address field. (You may also enter a second address in the Alternate Email Address field)

  • Click OK to close the Preferences window.

  • Parent Account users should then click on the Family tab at the top, then click on their child's name. Student Account users should click on the My Info Tab at the top.

  • Click on the Notification side tab.

  • Check off the Notification(s) you want to enable.

  • Enter a grade threshold if you are activating the grade notification.

Please note that parents with multiple children need to activate these notifications for each of their children. The grade notifications only apply to assignment grades on the Academics Tab for students in grades 6-12. Transcript grades posted at the end of each quarter do not trigger these notifications.

Three-fer Thursday from South! 5/22/2025

Three from South: (1.) Tomorrow--Friday, 5/23--South will host our annual Memorial Day Assembly starting at 1:00 PM. 8th graders have been working hard to prepare their Veterans Projects and a group will present them while our entire school honors local veterans and the fallen heroes of our Armed Services.  Students are encouraged to  wear red, white & blue  to show your patriotic spirit for our veterans and honored guests.  There will be  no student dismissals after 1pm , as it is too disruptive to the memorial assembly.  This year's assembly will be held in the large Gym due to the nor'easter, but guests are still welcome! If you would like to attend the assembly, please enter through the Main Entrance to get a visitors sticker and then proceed down to the Gym. Mark your calendars! All 8th grade Veterans Projects will be on display in the Media Center on Friday, 6/6, for the public to view and explore our students' research. If you're looking for an e...

Bulldog Bulletin - 6/3/2025

Congratulations to all the students that participated in the Trills and Thrills music festival this past Friday - your hard work and effort paid off! Your playing and love for music impressed one of the adjudicators so much that he wrote an email to our superintendent letting him know how much he appreciated South Middle School’s music program!  7th & 8th grade orchestra won gold and the 7th & 8th grade Band and Concert Choir both earned silver.  This Thursday, 6/5, is the last day for Late Bus this school year. Students can still stay after for extra help, but you’ll need to arrange for a ride home or plan to walk! Homework Lab also ends this Thursday, so if you plan to stay after, you’ll need to make plans with one of your teachers. Don't forget! Bus registration ends next Friday, 6/13.  See the Districtwide post for bus registration information. Please check the Yearbook Sales list posted at your homeroom entrance.  If anyone thinks they purchased a y...
