South Cinco - Tuesday, 3/11

 1. SOUTH PTO

The March meeting of the South PTO is this Thursday, 3/13 @ 7pm. See attached agenda.
2. MARCH MADNESS
We are going to try something new this year and have a March Madness 3v3 Tourney here at South. It will be a single-elimination, bracket-style tournament with 5th and 6th graders matched up, and 7th & 8th. The tourney will be held on Tuesday, 3/18, after school in the Gym. Money raised will go to South's PTO. See Ms. Ricketts with any questions or to register your team. All forms and registration must be submitted directly to her in room 1045 since this event is first come first serve. No forms will be accepted without payment.

3. PARENT DISCUSSION GROUP: The Anxious Generation - THURSDAY, 3/20
The final meeting of The Anxious Generation book club has been moved to Thursday, 3/20 to allow more people to join the conversation. In the final meeting, we will talk about what we can do to support kids' healthy childhoods. You do not need to have read/listened to the book to be part of the discussion! If you have the book, you can read the last section about "Solutions to the Problem" but you won't even need that background to contribute to the group. We've all seen and heard enough about cell phones, social media, participation trophies, and helicopter parenting to have opinions on these topics! What is the right age to get a smartphone? Should kids have flip phones before they "graduate" to smartphones? Which social media apps are OK? At what age? What can families do to build community in Braintree? How can the schools help? What do you want politicians to be fighting for when it comes to safe childhoods? Join us on Thursday night to share your ideas and hear from your neighbors!

4. MIDTERM 3
Last Thursday, 3/6, was Midterm for Quarter 3. Teachers have been speaking to kids about missing work and retake opportunities and all grades are being updated in Aspen by this Friday! Check Aspen and talk to your child if their grade isn't where you think it should be. They should make arrangements to stay after with their teacher this week if they need to make something up, or they should schedule extra help as needed.

5. APRIL CALENDAR RAFFLE

We love the month of April because of the South PTO "April Calendar Raffle"! For those who are not familiar with this event, the students sell raffle tickets to family members, trusted neighbors, family friends, your co-workers, etc.--or buy raffle tickets themselves. In turn, each ticket holder has a chance to win a prize every school day in April! All prizes have been donated by local businesses and individuals, so 100% of the ticket sales raise funds to support all of the PTO missions: school trips & assemblies, classroom supplies, extracurricular clubs & activities, teacher appreciation. And, while we love showing appreciation to our teachers, the kids also appreciate it because they can win some pretty cool things, thanks to the generosity of our community!

With all best wishes,
Damon Rainie

Wednesday Woof from South

We are immensely proud of our 7th grade English teacher, Mrs. Christine Norris, who was honored last night at the Norfolk County Teachers' Association annual awards ceremony. Mrs. Norris was nominated by her colleagues for the NCTA Honor Award, saying:  Christine’s contributions to South are immeasurable. She is the type of person who, if she’s going to do something, she’s going to take the time to do it right. This year alone, she’s co-running the Grade 8 Washington, D.C. trip, co-creating the Yearbook, co-creating the Field Day Murder Mystery activity, co-running the South dance, and co-running the South Student Council, which this year was combined with the Community Service club because, you guessed it, she runs that, too! When you ask her about running all of these things, she humbly downplays her involvement. Don’t let her fool you--she’s one of the hardest-working teachers at South.  To be honest, even that extensive list of projects is incomplete; Mrs. Norris is...

Grade 8 Upcoming Events

Grade 8 Students & Caregivers: Next week, your child is scheduled to participate in an MCAS grade 8 Civics field test on Monday, 6/3 and Tuesday, 6/4. In order to administer a new grade 8 Civics test in the future, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education must try out new test questions before the test becomes operational and scores can be provided to parents, schools, and districts. Your child’s participation is important and allows the state to build a valid and reliable test by helping to ensure a representative sample of students from across the state.   On Monday, 6/10, the 8th grade is taking the annual end-of-year trip to Level99 in Natick. Please make sure you have filled out the Level99 waiver  AND  the school's online permission slip in ParentSquare in order to participate. Contact a team teacher with any questions. Grade 8 Appreciation Night will be held at South on Thursday, 6/13, beginning at 6:00 PM. Families and loved ones are invited to joi...
