Bulldog Bulletin - 1/17/2023

I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. It was nice to have an extra day to let the snow work itself out, without having to worry about be out in the predawn gloom! The holiday is observed on Dr. King's birthday, a good opportunity to remember that--although he is often idealized in the stories we tell--he was a son, a husband, a father, and a friend first. From this humble man arose an inspiration to adopt nonviolent methods and appeal to people's morality in demanding a change, rather than using force. Dr. King shined a light on the unequal treatment of people of color and spoke about the dangers of inequality regardless of race. He saw the poor families across this country struggling to stay afloat and get ahead while others made decisions that would impact other folk but not themselves, and he insisted that our Founders wanted more for us as Americans. At South, we teach our students to develop a voice and a vision so they are ready for their responsibilities in this representative democracy as they grow up. That's why we tell them every morning: Be good to yourself. Take care of each other. Take care of your school. If we all start by taking care of our little piece of the world, justice is within our reach.

This Thursday, 1/19, is the South PTO meeting. The meeting agenda is attached. We will meet in the Media Center from 7-8 PM.

Next Tuesday, 1/24, is an Early Release for teacher professional development. Dismissal will be at 11:45 AM. Lunch is not served, but you will be sent a link if you'd like to reserve a free bagged lunch.

On 1/24, South PTO has signed up for a Dine-Out at Papa Gino's! Whether it's students meeting up for lunch on the Early Release Day or families dining in or ordering takeout for dinner, please give the server the attached flyer to let them know that you're supporting South and 20% of your order will go to the PTO! (Online orders, enter code 19 at the payment screen to qualify.) You can show the flyer on paper or on your phone; paper copies will be handed out to students in homeroom on 1/24. Opening the new South building

After years of planning, design, and construction, South Middle School will open its doors on September 6, 2023 to 5th grade through 8th grade in our new building!  This week, teachers got permission to start coming in to set up classrooms, and they have been dodging construction and subcontractor crews for the past few days, preparing their rooms and adding their personal touch to make the brand new spaces ready for the students.  The energy throughout the building is downright gleeful as folks see the light-filled classrooms, spacious hallways, and state-of-art facilities that will be supporting our students’ learning and growth going forward. Of course, the faculty is always excited to welcome a new class of scholars every fall, but this year takes that sense of rebirth and limitless possibility to a whole new level!  As eager as we are to welcome students and families to the new building, it is not yet safe to open our doors to the public. The construction team is putting on the fi
